First, the enormous continuing success of the Big Sound Challenge, with Paula Liness as Chair, and with support from Ontario Sailing. This has become a major training event for youth.
Our outstanding sailors have been chosen for the Ontario Sailing Team and the Ontario Sailing Development Team. They have competed and won gold.
Ontario Sailing is building consistent funding for their Ontario Sailing Development Team coach who, for example, comes to the Big Sound Challenge every year. A minimal contribution from enough individuals will ensure the sustainability of this vital role.
The skills practised with the sport transfer beautifully into life off the water. Dedication, fortitude, tenacity, leadership, responsibility, independence, confidence, judgement, fairness, compassion and decision making are life skills that are demonstrated and reinforced by the coaches of Ontario Sailing. You not only develop stronger sailors, you develop stronger people. We acknowledge and very much appreciate all that you have given our son.
Here is the challenge: Help SPS to be the club with the greatest percentage of members participating in this simple plan.
From August
SPS boaters, SPS boaters, SPS boaters
This is SPS, SPS, SPS
We are planning our first weekend rendezvous August 6.
Totem Pole Bay on Huckleberry Island.
Lat N45 22.954
Lon W80 07.366
Depth 10 ft. +
Any time after noon. Probably mid afternoon if you’re going to catch
the wind to sail in. Jo and I will be in the Blue Pearl –
30 ft pilothouse motorsailer - and should be there with a secure anchor set.
It will be fun to step from boat to boat to GAM. The water is warm. We can BBQ. We can look at the charts and pick the next rendezvous spot.
Drop your own hook or gun’l up to the Pearl (but we’ve never done it, so help us figure it out).
Huckleberry is a conservation area and there are trails on shore for hiking. The blueberries look picked over though.
If the weather is bad on Saturday – plan B is Sunday August 7, plan C is August 13, D is Aug 14.
Will you please RSVP @ sailparrysound.on.ca if you plan to attend and can take passengers.
If you want to attend but need a ride, please let me know: direct email: president @ sailparrysound.on.ca . We hope to see you there.

Sail Parry Sound takes GOLD! and first overall in Top Individual Performances
in 2011 MLA Muskoka Inter-Club Youth Sailing Championship - Aphrodite Cup
The 2011 MLA Muskoka Inter-Club Youth Sailing Championship - Aphrodite Cup was held at the Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club on Lake Rosseau on July 26, 2011.
This youth sailing championship has a long history in Muskoka and has recently been revitalized by the MLA Muskoka Sailing Network of clubs. Six racing teams attending, competing for the coveted Aphrodite Cup. The clubs who participated were Lake of Bays Sailing Club(LBSC), Lake Joe Yacht Club (LJYC), Kettles, Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club (MLGCC), Sail Parry Sound (SPS) and South Muskoka Sailing School (SMSS).
The students (ages 10-16) had an excellent day of racing in 15-20 kph winds. Lots of fast racing action in the Club 420 sailboat, a 2-person dinghy used my most Ontario sailing schools. We had a few capsizes, tight mark rounding's and lots of teams hoisting their spinnakers to get maximum performance from their boat. The Race Committee, managed by MLGCC instructors Lisa Foley and Spencer Hawtin got off 5 races during the day. Each boat was allowed to drop their worst finish, counting the best 4 races for the overall scoring. All clubs were scored as a combined team to create overall sailing school placing. Racing 3 boats per club, gave us an exciting 18 boat fleet.
Racing Results:
1st place (Gold Medal): Sail Parry Sound
Grant Kavanagh, Clark Schultz, Julia Pitcher, James Hampson, Kayla Simmons& James Titterington. Race coach: Ryan Cavanaugh.
2nd place (Silver Medal): South Muskoka Sailing School

3rd place (Bronze Medal): Kettles Sailing Club
Alex Benson, Luke Fenton, Rachel Fenton, Chris Anderson, Ian Christie, Elliott Black, Lindsay Carson & Ben Elliott. Race Coaches: Brendan Horan, Carter Comish, Rob Christie.
Honourable mention:
Lake Joseph Yacht Club

Lake of Bays Sailing Club
Laura Thompson, Alexa Fenton, Colin Armstrong, Hillary Newediuk, Lesli Ransom & Andrew Court. Race coach: Marshall Peebles.
Muskoka Lakes Golf & Country Club
Claire Gallagher, Emma Grant, Sam King, Brittany Niblett, Jordyn Ross, Nick Wellner, Nikole Benson, Conner Gallagher, Matt Herrman, Taylor Ross, Carter Burges. Race coaches Spencer Hawtin & Lisa Foley.
Although this was a team scoring event, we have some terrific racers that consistently were leading the fleet. Top individual performances:
1. 1st overall: Grant Kavanagh, Clark Schultz from SPS
2. 2nd overall: Alex Loe, Parker Phillips from SMSC
3. 3rd overall: Alex Benson, Luke Fenton from Kettles
The MLA Marine Team provided safety assistance on the race course and Race Committee support. The MLA also provided awards for the competitors, including a brand new Aphrodite Cup trophy, presented by Michael Hart, Chairman MLA Muskoka Sailing Network. MLGCC hosted an excellent BBQ and provided much need cold drinks for the kids.
Our special thanks to the host Trevor Noonan and Lisa Foley and their team at MLGCC. Photos and more information are available at www.mla.on.ca (Sailing tab) or from the MLA Sailing Office a sailing @ mla.on.ca

This was our third event and we are growing! We had our original four clubs return (SPS, LJYC, SLSC, SMSC) and two new groups of sailors join us (Go Home Bay and OSDT). Sailors, Coaches, Elite Coaches and Chaperones have all told me they will be back again!
Sailors...our goal is to provide new skills and a whole lot of fun. Mission accomplished with both 420 and Laser training combined with an evening at the Stockey Centre with the inspirational Rolex Sailor of the Year, Fred D. Eaton, a BBQ and a beach party!
Coaches...our goal is to enhance the skills and strengthen our coach community. We can now add certification of 6 LTRs and 1 WS coach to our list of accomplishments!
Community...our goal is to strengthen the sailing community. We have built a community of chaperones from all clubs that return year after year and are involved in the both the planning and execution of the BSC.
This note is to thank you for your contributions to the Big Sound Challenge...we really couldn't do it without you!
Thank you...see you next year!

DICK FACER—a sad loss for Sail Parry Sound |

|
When we first started the Sail Parry Sound Sailing School, a good friend, John Mason, came to me and said, “You need to get in touch with Dick Facer. He will help.” I didn’t have to get in touch with Dick. He came to me right away. “I’ll help,” was all he said. And help he did. Every day. From the very start. Dick found us sailboats, lent his boats - sail and power - fixed our boats – over and over. At the end of each season he would take home broken sailboat parts. At the beginning of each season he would show up with a set of centreboards and rudders for our little boats, all in good repair and freshly painted with bright colours. Working alongside Dick was always an event in itself. He had stories spanning the globe and generations of time. He would readily share them with children, parents, volunteers and strangers. He was a teacher, a coach, an athlete, a carpenter, a mechanic, a gentleman… a friend. He loved sailing, loved that we were teaching kids to sail, and loved that our kids were becoming sailing instructors – especially his granddaughter Emma. I don’t think Dick ever missed a Sail Parry Sound event. At our weekly dinghy races, Dick would race his keel boat around the course. I recall another seasoned sailor friend commenting, “He sails that boat beautifully”. At our last AGM he was enthusiastic about helping develop a cruising schedule for members. Last Friday, Dick and Sue were on our boat and we were discussing Sail Parry Sound’s events for the summer – mostly ideas for a cruising schedule and beautiful places to gun’l up or drop the hook and spin a few yarns with friends. He was enthusiastic about his new electric motor installation in the boat. Dick passed away on Saturday night in his home. We will miss him dearly but his legacy will live on with Sail Parry Sound. Fair Winds, my friend. Larry Woolner, President (You can join Dick's friends and family at the Visitation to be held at the Logan Funeral Home, 81 James Street, Parry Sound, on Wednesday, June 1st between the hours of 7 – 9 P.M.
Service to take place in the Chapel on Thursday, June 2nd at 2:00 P.M. Notice at http://www.logansfuneralhome.com/notices_display.php?id=767 ; (also shown below) Private messages of condolence may be placed online.
